You can use plugin W3 Total Cache, Optimize image.
If you don't use map you should disable them. (You can send me FTP account, I will help you add this option).

If all the customizations you made through the Child Theme, then you don't need to worry and update as usual. But if you edit directly in the Parent Theme, you need to backup those files before updating.
After the update, you can activate Child Theme and customize it based on the backup file.
