Hi Code master,
I translated 14% of the English language file into my own language that doesn't exist inside the noo-jobmonster > languages folder by a famous (as famous as job monster) plugin called Loco Translate.
14% though it has been a crazy amount of hours because didn't use automatic translation tools like Deepl API etc...
My question is how I can merge my own language PO with your PO or POT when there is an update on the main POT in the future.
I really fear for that if I cannot merge the file because of the time I took for 14%...
I don't know why but somewhat I used the existing en_US PO file as a base and then created my language file not via POT file.Your advice is really appreciated.
2 years, 1 month ago #1219337Hi.
Thank you for contacting us.
With the Loco translate plugin, please re-locate your translate language file to the system folder, that will avoid affect when an update on the main POT file in the future.
Please recheck it.
Thanks.
2 years, 1 month ago #1219344Hi Jackie,
Thanks for your reply.
The system folder means "/themes/noo-jobmonster/languages" right?
At this stage, I have the translated PO (& MO) inside the child theme language folder and it is working fine.
"/themes/noo-jobmonster-child/languages"My question was in not to get overwritten automatically and lost the translated text when the theme update happens. I always back up translated PO file somewhere as well but I want to be able to merge the updated main en_US PO file with my language PO file. This way I can keep applying a new translation (if there is a new line of text) added by the theme creator).
I hope this makes sense.
2 years, 1 month ago #1219354No, please do not put the translated file to our theme language: /themes/noo-jobmonster/language. That folder will overwrite when you update the theme.
Put your language file to the system folder: languages/theme/noo-xxx.po https://prnt.sc/FZ1eZlCXbFBk that will keep that file when you update the theme or WP core.
If you want to merge the new string from the new version, please go to Loco translate/ themes/ select the theme/ select the language/ and click to sync button, that will help you get a new string. https://prnt.sc/QMruxFnsqq6d
Please check it and let us know again if you still have question.
Thanks.
2 years, 1 month ago #1219364Hi Jackie,
Thanks for your support.
While I understand why you said this "/themes/noo-jobmonster/language. That folder will overwrite when you update the theme", do I have to worry because my PO/MO file is located at "/themes/noo-jobmonster-child/languages/" don't I? Do I really have to move it to wp-content/languages/themes/?
Child theme language location is working fine. Please find the attached.
Also please note that the language is Japanese so the file is ja.po / mo which your theme's original translation folder does not include.
My question is if I can merge a new English (base language) strings into my ja.po file because it wasn't generated from the original POT file but "en_US.po" file.

Yes, if you are using a child theme, you can put the language in the child theme folder. It will avoid missing when updating the theme.
For the new language, you also can use the sync button on Loco Translate.
Thanks.

Yes, anything in child theme isn't going to be overwritten. That is obvious...
But my question is not about that....
(I think the main topic is lost in this thread. Please follow the original question)
Below is my original quesiton. How I can merge my own language PO (ja.po) with your PO or POT when there is an update on the main POT in the future.
When there is a update on POT file (thus en_US.po file), can I merge that into my ja.po file?
I am worried because it wasn't generated from the original POT file but "en_US.po" file.Thank you.
2 years, 1 month ago #1219399Thanks Jackie.
I solved this by myself.
After downloading POT File to my local computer and used PO Edit to open my ja.po file.
Then selected menu option "update from POT" file. >> I selected POT file and merged and updated my ja.po file.I upload the ja.po file onto remote loco translate folder. It looks like all fine now because I could also translate "About Us" section. (This was from other post).
I still thank your input here as I didn't know en_US.po does not include full translatable strings from POT file.
In the future I will make sure to get the update from original POT file whenever the theme has got update. Then my ja.po should be fine I believe... Am I correct?
2 years, 1 month ago #1219428Yes, thank you for your feedback. The en_US.po file doesn't include a full translation string from the POT file. Sometimes we also add the language to the POT file, not to the en_US file.
Thanks.
